This Caprese salad recipe, or tomato and mozzarella salad--with layers of thickly sliced tomato and mozzarella, garnished with fresh basil--calls for the best quality ingredients you can afford.

For this simple salad recipe we like to use the imported buffalo mozzarella that can be found in Italian specialty food stores.

And if you use your own ripe, juicy garden tomatoes and fresh basil no doubt this Caprese recipe will taste even better.

As with any fresh basil recipe it will be a pleasure to prepare. (Don’t you just love the scent of fresh basil?)

And this Italian salad recipe is a feast for the eyes too. Simple ingredients such as mozzarella, tomato and basil are beautifully combined whether artfully arranged in a circle or layered casually on a plate.

For this easy salad recipe you will need:

1 pound ripe, juicy tomatoes

3/4 pound imported Italian mozzarella

Salt to taste

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

10 to 12 fresh basil leaves, shredded


Cut tomatoes into 1/4-inch-thick slices.

Cut mozzarella into 1/4 –inch thick slices

Arrange the tomato and mozzarella slices alternating on individual serving dishes.

Season lightly with salt.

Sprinkle with the olive oil and basil.

Serve Caprese salad at room temperature.
