Cranberry Sauce Recipe

This cranberry sauce recipe is essentially a basic fruit sauce recipe--equal parts sugar and water plus the fruit of your choice.

In its simplest form the natural tartness of the cranberries shines through, especially if you choose to cut back on the sugar.

Research has shown cranberries health benefits are numerous. These healthy berries are bursting with antioxidants and other photonutrients that may help protect against cancer, heart disease, gum disease, and other diseases.

But many people still only eat roast turkey with cranberry sauce, or use leftover cranberry sauce as a condiment on turkey sandwiches.

Considering the health benefits of cranberries it would be a shame to think of this only as “thanksgiving cranberry sauce” when it can be enjoyed year-round with turkey, chicken and pork too.

Prepare this homemade cranberry sauce a couple of days ahead of time if you wish. Here are some variations you may want to try:

Make orange cranberry sauce by substituting orange juice for water, and adding a couple of teaspoons of freshly grated orange zest.

Create a spicy cranberry sauce recipe by adding spices to the pot while mixture is bubbling away on the stove. Try adding a ¼ teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg, and allspice. Add a couple of sticks of cinnamon too, but don’t forget to remove them before serving.

For this easy cranberry sauce you will need:

1 cup sugar (white or brown)

1 cup water or orange juice

1 12 ounce package of fresh cranberries

In a medium saucepan over medium heat dissolve sugar in water.

Add cranberries and stir until they start to pop. (About 10 minutes)

Remove from heat and transfer to a bowl.

Cover and let it cool completely. (The sauce will thicken as it cools)

This easy sauce recipe makes about 2 ¼ cups
